We Have Come This Far By Faith

 Our Mission:

We exist to proclaim Christ, prepare saints, and provide ministry for victorious living.

Acts 1:8, Ephesians 4:11-16, Luke 4:8 and Philippians 3:10-14 we do not know what God will do as a result of prayer until we pray, God has answered our prayers, and in this we are made glad.

On October 4, 1973, the Sanctuary Choir, along with a group of determined Christians met in the Friends Guild at 8th & Fairmount Street to discuss the formation of a church to worship and serve the Lord.

This site was secured through the efforts of Sister Rosa Newkirk. At this meeting, it was decided to begin worshiping on Sunday mornings. Seventy-four dollars was collected to help secure a place for Sunday Worship.

Our first service was October 11, 1973 in the Pannonia Hall, 709 Franklin Street. Sister Rosa Newkirk was again instrumental in securing a temporary place of worship. Rev. T. M. Carter was the preacher.

It was decided that we would step out on FAITH and formally organize the church so that we could worship God in peace and tranquility. Most of us, being pastored by the late Rev. Harold 0. Davis decided to name the church in memory of him.

Rev. Kermit L. Newkirk, Jr. was our acting Pastor. After five months, Rev. Newkirk was ordained at The Harold O. Davis Baptist Church on Sunday, March 10, 1974, by the late Rev. J. Henry Milteer, Pastor of the Berean Baptist Church.

On the 3rd Sunday in January 1975, Harold O. Davis Memorial Baptist Church was set apart to be an independent Missionary Baptist Church by the Beacon Light Association. In August 1975, God blessed us to move from 709 Franklin Street to 10th Street & Roosevelt Boulevard.

Before we moved to our present location, a meeting was held at the home of Sancho Robinson with Dr. Shelter and officers from the United Church of Christ, along with a delegation from the Harold O. Davis Memorial Baptist Church.

It was evident at that meeting that our young pastor was a strong factor in our being the ones to be selected to purchase this building because of his great concern for the community and the desire to be affiliated with the United Church of Christ.
